STYLISH SHOPPING IN THE SUN: NATHAN TURNER'S NEW LA DIGS

Photos courtesy of Nathan Turner
The outside of Nathan's new shop

A little bit boho a lot California casual, Nathan Turner's new LA shop is filled with global finds. Having migrated over from Almont Yard, he is now at 8546 Melrose Avenue, down the street from Nicky Rising's showroom and across the road from Michael S. Smith's Jasper showroom. From rustic finishes to bohemian artisanal imports, there is an earthy lived - in look that pervades Nathan's new digs. Goods culled from global travels capture the spirit of a wanderlust. As a born and raised Californian, he has perfected the mixing entertaining, lifestyle, and decor with an eclectic ease. Cozy and oh - so - perfect for the casual LA lifestyle where comfort is key, drop by and check out his new retail home when you are shopping West Hollywood.

Nathan next to some earthy vases filled with succulents-- oh so California!

A neutral sofa is transformed by spring green zig zag pillows while a rustic wooden table and African stools round out a seating area with casual yet graphic components.

Blue and white tabletop with boho chic appeal.

Nathan's new awning stripe logo is fresh and graphic.

Chairs upholstered in a soft stripe, rustic urns on fluted columns and a white Moroccan coffee table make a seating area that is casual and relaxed.

Embroidered blankets from India add texture and vivid pattern to a sofa in a snap.

Mixing woods, bamboo and paintings of rustic California landscapes the feel is chill, chill, chill.

Another angle reveals the rough hewn wooden coffee table and gallery style wall of nature paintings.

Lanterns, small pull up tables and a mid century desk all with a slightly weathered, natural look, easily achieve a California carefree style.

Love the artwork hanging behind the linen upholstered sofa. An acrylic flower painting by artist Veronica Navajas hangs next to a landscape photograph giving the wall some real punch, attesting to the power of great art. Check out the little white wood ottomans in the indigo and white wide stripe nearby.

A graphic wood and bamboo mirror rests on a side table stacked with home books and a swirly glazed lamp with a 60's vibe.

The dogs! Nathan's labs are often hanging out if you want to say hi. They are totally adorable.

A HARBINGER OF THINGS TO COME

Once is not enough when it comes to visiting Harbinger. Joe Lucas and Parrish Chilcoat of Lucas Studio have created a hot design destination in their new location on La Cienega Boulevard in West Hollywood.
Each visit brings a new discovery. Be on the lookout for fresh finds from Europe, wallpapers and fabrics from newcomer Lindsay Alker, Living Vintage fabrics from Alt for Living, Beeline Home by Bunny Williams, and lots more.
I can't resist showing the rest of the shop, after my initial coverage here, as I get endless inspiration from it. I think you will too.

The vignette that greets you has a divine Coleen and Company faux animal painted table, small chair upholstered in a Katie Leede fabric and a nicely scaled Swedish bench.

Take it all in-- it goes on and on!

The Katie Ridder fabrics and wallpaper section, in neat little quadrants.

A tufted velvet sofa, custom coffee table and Beeline Home chairs and mirror draw you in. I think you will find love at first site.

A great painted Swedish chair and celadon leather.

A long table is ready for scheming.

A raffia wrapped chair and raku glazed garden seat make an instant moment. In fact, the store is made up of so many well done rooms, you will want to say, "wrap it up, I'll take it all."

A bed made up in custom embroidered hangings from Holland and Sherry.

I snuck a shot of Joe and Parrish's office. It looks pretty organized, I must say.

A seating area in the back faces an entire wall of Holland and Sherry fabrics.

More fabrics!

A table vignette with wonderful painted pottery and a screen in an Idarica fabric.

Love the mini-camel-back sofa in a Katie Leede fabric.

Prints etc and Italian vases.

Not one's to overlook details, the signage is proper. Looking for the W.C.? Right this way.

A bold wide green, grey white and black alternating stripe is a nice surprise, a la Paul Smith.

Pow! This (additional) powder room mixes a graphic Italian red and blue pomegranate paper with a super cool Malachite octagonal mirror.

NO ORDINARY POST OFFICE

Edit edit edit. These three words come to mind whenever I visit one of my favorite retail meccas, The Brentwood Country Mart in LA. A destination for curated shopping and yummy food, the Mart takes the red barn exterior and turns it into an urban wonderland culling the best local independent brands from New York like Roberta Roller Rabbit and Turpan housewares, to homegrown heros like Sugarpaper and James Perse. Don't be fooled by the words country and mart though. This is as upscale casual as it gets, where every shop has amazing signage done in cool fonts on white hanging signs. Since 1949, you could visit for the barber shop, cobbler and post office. One gem at the Mart is the Trading Post. It reminds me of a little shop you might find in a small summer village in Maine that carries just the basics and sundry items. It originally served as a sub post office to residents of Brentwood, Santa Monica, Pacific Palisades and West Los Angeles. It has evolved, so now you can mail letters and packages and buy stuff. Go out of your way to visit the Mart, it is a hidden gem worth discovering!

Two crisp white doors swing open welcoming purveyors of chic. Everything is neat and tidy with merchandising perfection.

Need a camp blanket, yeah, theyve got that too.

A wall of stark white square cubby's with a rolling ladder are perfect for displaying product vignettes. Each object gets highlighted for it's unique qualities and pared down design. From canvas bags and Field Notebooks to espadrilles if it is chic and simple, then it is here.

Seed packs and a jaunty Hable Construction Garden Hat in the Gardening section (!)

Saint James nautical striped shirts that have become a summer staple

Checked paper napkins in a roll from My Drap for easy picnicking.

Talk about a return to the classics-- choose from all white or white and navy Tretorns.

And let's not forget about the classic cult Tee Shirt from Petit Bateau.

MORE FROM LA: VISITING JASPER MICHAEL S. SMITH'S WEST HOLLYWOOD SHOWROOM

I finally got the chance to visit Michael Smith's new (ish) LA Showroom, Jasper in West Hollywood. I had eagerly awaited seeing a showroom devoted to his designs, as well as those of Bujosa from Italy, Van Der Hurd, Jamb Fireplaces from England, Gracie Wallpapers, and Robert Kime Fabrics. It is very helpful about seeing a space styled with a singular vision and feel- you really get to see how pieces work together. His fabrics have beautiful, rich colorations and old world English and ethnic patterns. His furniture looks to great antique pieces and reinterprets them for today-- their scale and finish is appropriate for comfortable living rooms and bedrooms in beach houses and city aeries. In cerused oak to gesso and dark wood, the form and details in the furniture makes each piece stand alone. Named for his dog, Jasper, the collection is filled with this Anglophiles touch and panache for easy living. His inviting spaces drew in Cindy Crawford and the Obama's. Now you can have a bit of his casual luxe look for yourself.

A vignette mixes artwork and a bamboo bed

Fabric bays hold wings filled with lines including his own.

Classic usable pieces, like a great wing chair and bench for the foot of the bed are on display.

Cozy seating areas capture the essence of a Michael S. Smith interior. Tons of throw pillows to sit back, and an easy place to put a drink are part of what makes his rooms great.

Smith likes to use slipcovers on pieces, especially in linen.

Remy in brown is a fabric I gravitate towards every time I visit the Rosselli Showroom in the D and D. There is something about the coloration and pattern that draws me in- I just have to use it on something soon!
