The Groenfontein Valley
I never tire of this back road between Oudshoorn and Carlitzdorp. It wanders along following the Groenfontein Valley and then up and over steeper hills with typical Klein Karoo vegetation. The turn-off to the Swartberg Pass is off this road too.
We overnighted at The Groenfontein Retreat which was lovely but a communal long table at breakfast is just plain weird to me. They were most accommodating though when I requested a private table on the lawn. Good food (homestyle cooking), an incredible location and slightly odd safari style decor in an old Victorian House all add to a rather charming place with extremely friendly and hands-on hosts. In a good way... except at breakfast but then I'm not a morning person.
The last little bit of road before entering Carlitzdorp
