Green House Plans Gone Wild!

Green is the big thing now in the design world and the house plans business.  I recently ran across these images of Icelandic houses that definitely take green to the next level of meaning.  Check them out below.

I love the repeating simple gable roof forms.
Grass grows nicely in Iceland.  Remember Iceland is green and Greenland is white.
The details exhibit a strong Scandinavian design influence.
Wow!

THE HALCYON DAYS ARE BACK

Halcyon Days, the British home - accessories - in - enamel company received a much needed design boost when they collaborated with Charlotte Moss on a new enamel collection. Long known for their tiny gold hinged boxes with sayings and flowers that graced coffee tables, vanity surfaces, and end tables from the Upper East Side to Grosse Pointe, their designs have gotten a shot in the arm with this stylish partnership. Two collections dubbed Muse and Wanderlust, take destinations and design themes as the impetus and inspiration. The New York pattern ties in with Moss' green and white Pickard China pattern, and the other designs are classic motifs that the New York- based designer loves, like brightly colored ikat, caning detail, fretwork and decorative flourishes. In addition to the bangle bracelets, the collection includes a travel alarm clock, vase, dish and ring box.
The 'Istanbul' Bangle from the Wanderlust Collection is a top pick for its rich colors and elaborate pattern.

The 'Nantucket' Basketweave Bangle from the Muse Collection with caning detail reminds me of the island I grew up going to and love so much.
The 'Palm Beach' Bangle from the Muse Collection captures the pastel uniform and manicured gardens that the getaway evokes.

'Tangiers' Bangle from the Wanderlust Collection is femme and full of flourishes.
The 'Ankara' Bangle from the Wanderlust Collection is a thin option for the ikat crowd.

The 'New York' Roundel Bangle from the Muse Collection is reminiscent of the tended gardens of New York parks.

INITIAL REACTIONS

Put your stamp on your stuff this year. From a clutch to tuck under your arm for an evening out, to a single letter pillow for your bed ensemble, these ideas will inspire you to spell it out.

I discovered these amazing custom return address stamps from Brookyn's Paperfinger while perusing the holiday Cool Hunting Pop Up Shop with the Gap. Bryn Chernoff started the stamp line to offer a custom and handmade calligraphy look to an easy to use stamp. These are a great alternative to a paper label and look as though you give and love and attention to every letter you send.

You can also add a border to your address, for even more flair.

Chose from one, two or three letters on these napkins from Emerson Made that fit perfectly into the rustic chic movement. Great for everyday use and bistro settings.

With the winter freeze in full swing, keep yourself warm with a felted wool monogram clutch from LA Plates. Choose any thread color for your monogram. This cutie is on my Happy New Year to me list.

A single letter says it all, and makes a great bridal shower gift. Jonathan Adler's baby Alpaca Pink Junior Letter Pillow with a simple border adds new life to a bed or side chair.

If warm winds are in your future, ramp up your vacation anticipation for the beach with a three letter monogram and border Utility Tote from Monogram Goods.

SO THIS IS THE NEW YEAR- GET A STYLISH START AND FILL IT WITH INSPIRED DESIGN

Photo courtesy of Linda and Harriet
SO, this is the New Year. It is finally here. Full of great promise and potential, the calendar has advanced to January. I plan to travel to my favorite places frequently as well as discovering new ones, enjoying the multi culti experience that is New York City, and embracing sponteneity. For Stylebeat, I am planning a blog year of more great giveaways, stylish design, sharing talent and undiscovered covetable products that you will want in your life.
One of the best ways to plan your work and work your plan is to write it down, and then tell someone else about your goals. This is, apparently, one of the most effective ways to create change and stick-to-it-iveness. As an appreciator of letterpress and great graphic design, Linda and Harriet's Calendar/Postcards are on my desk to help me stay focused on making every day memorable. Penguins for January, and Popsicles for June will help me keep my eye on the prize.
So this is my plan:
to seek out new design obsessions, bring you new discoveries from the upcoming NY Gift Show, recap The Winter Antique Show, wait with anticipation for the new Architectural Digest every month, get excited for Lonny's Trad Home online-only Mag in May, cover new design books, be at the AD Home Show at Pier 94 come March and the DIFFA Event on March 17th, volunteer at The Kips Bay Designer Showhouse back on schedule this April, be inspired by The Aesthetic Movement 1860-1900 Retrospective at London's V and A Museum, get edgy with The Alexander McQueen Homage in May at the Met's Costume Institute, see creative combinations at Color Moves: Art and Fashion by Sonia Delaunay at the Cooper Hewitt in March, and submerse myself in history with American Style: Colonial Revival in the Modern Metropolis in June at the Museum of The City of New York.
What do you want to do this year?

Architects Have Great Tools - Color Visualizer

Every once in a while I like to give you an example of the tools I use in my business.  One of these tools is the
Sherwin Williams Color Visualizer.  I use it to perform quick color studies; which helps me to narrow concepts down pretty quickly.

The tool is pretty simple to use.  You just choose from one of their preloaded exterior architectural styles; then you paint the scene with colors that you choose from the Sherwin Williams palette.  Below is one set of color studies I performed in less than five minutes.

When it's time to repaint your house you might give this tool a try.  You can find it at Sherwin Williams Color Visualizer.

One important note:  Please put a good size sample up on your wall before you make a final commitment to your colors.  One additional step I do at Ron Brenner Architects and Simply Elegant Home Designs is to take my colors and apply them to my 3d house model.  You can see an example of that at Architects Have Great Tools!

WOVEN TOGETHER: LANCE WOVENS

There is a certain excitement that comes from finding new companies creating beautiful products, especially when they think differently. One such new entrant is Lance Wovens. Their gift show booth stopped me in my tracks for good reason. Created by Connecticut-based Annie Arnold and Italian Stefano Bruni, Lance uses the finest Italian leathers in a signature woven technique. The result in a lush artistry that brings the best of classic Italian style with a distinctly American sense of style. The Hudson is a riff on the classic camp blanket stripes, and the faded indigo is like a favorite pair of jeans. Find them at Bergdorf Goodman and through their website.

A plethora of juicy colors and patterns await. Always interesting and highly textured, these pillows can give new life to a piece that needs some punch.

More patterns to match any interior from monochromatic to bold. The Hudson on the bottom is a remix on the classic camp blanket's wide stripe.

Hand woven leather rugs with fringed ends will get better with age.

They have reinvented the boat tote with their chic woven leather version. The handles and bottom have a pop of color, making the classic run around bag a standout.

The Hudson pillow in purple hues.

The Runway pillow in a zingy color combination.

The Mod, an enlarged plaid pattern.

A pool blue aqua solid pillow would look amazing in a tropical setting.

Even the booth design was chic.

The Runway sits next to the Bling with metallic and solid leather woven together.
